Spotlight on Walter Reed Army Medical Center

located in Washington DC, the host city for the 2008 Annual meeting

Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been in the news recently for neglect of Building 18, the place where soldier recuperate after being wounded during their tour of duty. However, their Interventional Radiology department is a far cry from this run down image. In fact, this summer, they are installing state of the art flat panel biplane angiography equipment from Phillips. This system will be able to perform CT-like images during Interventional procedures. This will complement their 3 year old Phillips system.

IR at Walter Reed perfroms 11,000 procedures per year, including venous access, chemo embolization, TIPS, UAE, treatment of AVM, and endovascular procedures. Although the radiologists are board-certified in Interventional Radiology, the Vascular Surgeons do most of the Endo-Vascular procedures.

The common perception of Walter Reed is of a surgical hospital that shines as the crown jewel of military medicine. It is one of 4 Army Medical Centers in the Continental US and serves as the referral center for the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command as well as Europe. the casualties from the Iraq war receive their treatment at Walter Reed.

Dan Engle is the Chief Technologist and has many years of experience. Nathan Russell and Amy Steele are Specialists in the Army, as well as Interventional Radiographers. There are also 6 RNs who rotate between Diagnostic Radiology and IR
